Feel the ribs and bones

Run your fingertips gently without pressing hard and assess how much covering you can feel.

Look from above

With the pet standing, look for the waist narrowing behind the ribs.

Look from the side

Check whether the abdomen rises towards the hind legs; in cats, also consider the abdominal fat pad.

Coat, breed, age and muscle loss can make visual assessment less reliable.

Is BCS the same as weighing my pet?+

No. Weight is one measurement; BCS looks at fat cover and body shape. Both can be useful together.

Can this diagnose obesity or illness?+

No. It is a screening aid. A veterinarian should assess unexplained weight change, muscle loss or health concerns.
