HOW IT WORKS

A result to understand, not just read.

Enter the one-way mileage and choose whether the trip includes a return leg. The calculator keeps fuel or charging cost, route charges and optional vehicle wear separate so the result stays easy to understand.

  • Fuel use is calculated in U.S. gallons from the mileage and MPG you enter.
  • For an EV, enter kWh per 100 miles and your average charging price per kWh.
  • Vehicle wear is optional and does not automatically include every ownership cost.

Should I enter round-trip miles?+

Enter one-way miles, then select Round trip. Add only detours or local driving in the extra-miles field.

What gas price should I use?+

Use the price you expect to pay along the route or a recent average for the states you will cross.

Does the result include depreciation?+

Only if you enter an optional wear cost per mile. The main total remains the immediate out-of-pocket cost.

How to estimate a U.S. road trip budget

Start with the distance, fuel economy or EV consumption, and the prices you expect along your route. Add the expenses for the whole trip to see the total and each traveler's equal share.

01 · FORMULA

Fuel, charging and the out-of-pocket total

Fuel cost = total miles ÷ U.S. MPG × dollars per gallon

Total miles includes the return leg when selected, plus extra driving. For an EV: charging cost = total miles ÷ 100 × kWh per 100 miles × dollars per kWh. Add tolls, parking, meals, ferries, permits and other costs to get the out-of-pocket total. Optional wear is shown separately.

02 · WORKED EXAMPLE

Example: a 280-mile trip for two

  • 140 one-way miles with Round trip selected; no extra miles
  • 28 U.S. MPG and an illustrative gas price of $3.50 per gallon
  • $15 in total tolls and two travelers; all other expenses set to zero
280 ÷ 28 = 10 gallons. Gas costs $35; with tolls, the trip costs $50, or $25 per traveler.

These are hypothetical inputs, not current fuel prices. Enter any meals, parking or other expenses for the whole trip, including everyone sharing the cost.

03 · HOW TO READ IT

How to interpret the result

  • Choose a recent gas price for your route. EIA publishes weekly averages by region and for selected states and cities.
  • Use U.S. MPG, not Imperial MPG. For an EV, enter kWh per 100 miles rather than MPGe; the EPA fuel economy label lists electricity consumption separately.
  • Divide the out-of-pocket total only among the people who will actually share the expense. Optional wear adds total miles × your chosen cost per mile to a separate scenario.
04 · LIMITS

What the estimate does not include

  • Driving conditions, speed, weather and vehicle load can change actual consumption.
  • Enter route charges and charging prices yourself. This calculator does not retrieve live tolls, gas prices or charging-station tariffs.
  • An optional wear allowance does not automatically include insurance, financing or every cost of owning a vehicle.
