From wattage to energy use
Watts measure instantaneous power. Multiply kilowatts by running hours to obtain energy in kWh.
An air fryer may not draw maximum power continuously. Temperature, thermostat cycling and food load change the average.
- 1,500 W = 1.5 kW
- 30 minutes = 0.5 hours
- 1.5 kW × 0.5 h = 0.75 kWh

Which kWh price should you use?
Use a price that is consistent with your bill and the question you are answering.
Fixed charges do not rise because of one cooking session. State whether your unit price includes them when comparing results.
- Check energy and cost for the same billing period
- Do not confuse kW with kWh
- Use the same price method for both appliances

Air fryer versus oven
Rated power alone is not a fair comparison. Include preheating, cooking time, batch size and an equivalent result.
Run two realistic scenarios and, if possible, measure one cycle with a plug-in energy meter.

1,500 W for 30 minutes, 20 times a month

This assumes continuous maximum power; thermostat cycling may reduce average consumption.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Multiplying watts directly by the kWh price
- Treating rated power as measured energy
- Comparing unequal cooking times or food quantities
- Using an unexplained all-in or energy-only price

Does a 2,000 W air fryer always use 2 kWh?+
No. It uses 2 kWh only if it draws 2 kW continuously for one hour.
Is it always cheaper than an oven?+
No. The answer depends on average power, preheating, cooking time and quantity.
